The 96 Wilson Explosion operates under the auspice of the Wilson Youth Soccer Association and for the 2009-2010 season will compete in U-13 Classic East Open division as scheduled by the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association. The team will compete in a variety of tournaments as well.
This is the third season competing at the Classic level and the girls step up to 11 on 11 competition on the larger fields. In 2008-2009 and 2007-2008 the Explosion competed in U12 and U11 divisions, playing 8 on 8.
During the 2006-2007 season, the 96 Explosion competed as a U10 Girls Challenge Soccer team, playing in the Down East Soccer Club Challenge League (regular season Champion with 15-0-1 record). The team also participated in the Carowinds Soccer Classic in Charlotte in 2006 (Champion), the President's Cup Soccer Tournament in Fuquay-Varina in Febroary 2007 (2nd Place), and the 14th Annual Seaside Classic in Wilmington in May (2nd Place). In the final U10 Challenge appearance, the Explosion won the Gold Medal at the State Games of North Carolina.
The team was formed in August 2006 with eleven players who tried out in the summer. Eight of the original 96 Explosion players had been members of the Heartbreakers, a U-9 travel team that played in 2005 and early 2006 in tournaments in Greensboro, Cary, Myrtle Beach, Greenville, Virginia Beach and Charlotte. The Heartbreakers were know for their pink uniforms. The Heartbreakers were Gold Medalists in the State Games of North Carolina in 2006.
Currently, fifteen girls make up the 2009-2010 edition of the 96 Explosion team. Each brings an important skill and personality to the team. The team is sponsored by Chuck Finklea, a State Farm Agent in Wilson.
